WITH WHOM ARE YOU DEALING?

This May birthday party (2008) marks my 60th year on the planet. I've had the good fortune to enjoy various lives in all that time, and have changed dramatically along the way. Through most of the journey, I determined to save the world on my own. Unhitching my wagon from that star, I now strive to make as positive an impact on people's lives as I possibly can. I've come to believe the world's problems come from the loss of a basic human need. NO!, not that. It is unfortunate that God gave us a penis and a brain, but only enough blood to operate one at time. The need of which I speak is that of control of our own lives. I believe all problems in the human condition ( global warming, crime, war) stem from loss of that basic need. One event and one person are principally responsible for what I believe will be the demise of humanity, along with religion. I'll speak first of the latter:

RELIGION: I see no relationship whatsoever between God and religion. God is something different for each of us, ranging from an invisible friend for adults to a divine being who controls our lives. He (or she) is personal, and I automatically distrust anyone who wears their religion on their shirtsleeve. Religion on the other hand is a business, and a great one at that. Nothing to manufacture, no taxes, no shipping, unions, strikes and the teachings---no matter how ridiculous they are---are defensible with one cliché: faith. The only product is the promise of a happy, eternal existence and no one can prove or disprove whether you have delivered. If you doubt it, you lack faith and thereby condemn yourself to what the believers will avoid. And in most faiths, your obligation to save your soul is to go out and recruit more clients (and, of course, contribute to the till).

I live in a Spanish-speaking country surrounded by Spanish-speaking countries because an Italian Jew passed himself off to a Spanish queen as a Spanish Catholic and set off to kill, steal and enslave people in the name of God. Most descendants of those who survived the massacre (my friends and neighbors) wear crosses on their necks. God and the pope are synonymous, and come up in most conversations. I see little difference between a Muslim believing he will sit with God by strapping a bomb around his waste and a Born-again believing he will sit with God by murdering a doctor who has performed an abortion. Historically, God unites people and religion divides them.;

THE EVENT: I see the building of the Panama canal as the turning point in the human trend. It removed France as a major world power and installed America. I snicker as politicians site the spread of world democracy, when in fact America never was one. Americans vote for members of the Electoral College (whose names they don't even know) who then select their leader. The most current example is George W., who is the fourth President Americans voted against. Yet the system was a good one, with one fallacy:: that the founders could not envision professional politicians.:

In building the canal, America first created a new country, taking the sovereign land from Columbia. Interestingly, the canal only succeeded by instilling Marxist socialism in the canal zone, which was highly successful for a decade. Along with establishing a new policy of ignoring the sovereignty of a foreign nation, the canal project (arguably the grandest accomplishment of mankind) firmly established lobbying as the way to get things done, and the military-industrial complex which controls the world today. Although continuing to claim democracy, few Americans agree with what their leaders are doing and how their money is being spent. A mass revolt changed Congress from Republican to Democrat, but nothing changed. So who is in charge? My point here being that Americans (and by extension world citizens) have come to realize a total lack of control in their lives.

THE PERSON: OJ Simpson did more to change America and the world than any individual of modern times. Aside from highlighting America's racial problems, it sadly demonstrated to the world that society gives much more notoriety to someone who can run fast than to the greatest contributors to human progress. Congress rushed to pass Domestic Violence (and DCF) laws (and use tax dollars to force them on their allies). This destroyed a Constitution that was already damaged by the IRS and War on Drugs. The War on Terror finished the Constitution off. Can you imagine explaining to George Washington or Thomas Jefferson that now you become a criminal on the basis of a phone call? That an 18-year-old kid can knock on your door and have your children taken from you? That thousands are arrested and jailed for going home or calling their wives. That tens of thousands of people around the world are imprisoned by America for years without being charged with a crime or having access to a lawyer?

Global Warming is real, and human-caused. Changing from incandescent to fluorescent light bulbs is a good idea. Will they save the planet? Hell no! America's "wars" (drugs, domestic violence, DCF, terror) have served to stimulate broken families, the drug trade, the criminal element and create terrorists). What can we do about it? Absolutely nothing. I know first-hand that the automotive industry had the next generation of clean-burning technology ready for production 40 years ago. Oil companies light up enough natural gas every day to power America (and more) which sends tons of CO2 into the atmosphere daily. There are solutions, they will not be implemented, and we have zero control over our fate.

So I see my current mission as giving some degree of happiness and escape. We do our best to provide opportunities---to escape a life of which you have no control (whether you own your business or work for one) and let you (at least temporarily) dictate the events of your life. In terms of personal gratification, if I permanently change one life for the better (we have permanently changed several) then my life becomes significant and I have become a contributor to something worthwhile in my declining years. Of course our companions generally do not comprehend any of this, as their educations and life experiences are much more limited and they are taught (in school) to believe that God and the pope are all that matter in the grand scheme.

So come to us with the right attitude. You can get laid, drink and gamble much easier and cheaper where you live---so there is no reason to come to Costa Rica just for that. Learn an new attitude, time reference, culture and language. Expand your horizons. Enjoy our perfect climate and variety of landscapes and activities. Leave with a different view of your world and ours. Maybe your life will improve permanently. We're here to help.
